The monasteries also include mills and bakeries, enabling the monks to live self-sufficiently. There are also many churches within each monastery. St. Anthony’s Church, the sacred core of the monastery, dates back to the 6th century. However, most parts of the building, including the important frescoes, date back to the 10th century.
Sequence
We will pick you up from your hotel at approximately 4:00 a.m. The pick-up time may vary depending on the location of the hotel and the program. You will embark on a roughly two-hour drive in a high-quality air-conditioned vehicle. Before reaching St. Anthony’s Monastery, you will cross the heart of the desert.
More than 1,600 years ago, the hermit Anthony lived here in a cave on a 680-meter-high mountain. A staircase with approximately 1,000 steps leads you up to the cave.
There you can admire Anthony’s ancient writings and drawings and enjoy the fantastic view of the surrounding mountains, the desert, and the sea.
Then we continue through the rugged valley to St. Paul’s Monastery. The monastery was built over the cave of St. Paul, a Christian hermit who died in the 4th century AD.
Afterward, we will drive to a restaurant for lunch.
After lunch, we will return to Hurghada.
You will be back at your hotel at approximately 5:00 p.m.
